Don't Burn Out...

One of the reasons I've always struggled in Corporate America was because I could never fully comprehend the 8-hour workday. Don't get me wrong, I believe in hard work. However, I believe we live in a culture that has been trained "what" to think instead of HOW to think. And the result is the majority of people waste their time doing things that don't move them closer to their desires and dreams.

Therefore instead of taking massive action, we end up becoming lost in the mundane day-to-day. Instead of pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones, we end up settling. Instead of betting on ourselves, we end up "playing it safe" at the risk of never getting in the game. I believe I just listed the in-depth definition of a dream deferred. YIKES!

I say that because when a dream moves from something you are striving and working towards to a past memory, that means your passion has burned out. Passion is the flame of purpose. You need passion to keep you excited, motivated, interested, and curious. And passion requires time, which brings me back to the beginning of this article. When you don't have time to dedicate to igniting your passion….you kill the flame of your purpose. In brief, you burn out.

Burnout is the reason I see so many people abandon their visions. It's because they haven't examined HOW they spend their time. They haven't given themselves space to rethink what they are doing daily. They don’t have standards, so they have no boundaries. They don't have boundaries so they spend a crazy amount of time people-pleasing. And lastly, they don't have structure, so they lack discipline. What I just described is being busy. Busy looks like productivity, but being busy is NOT the same as being productive.

Productive is rooted in your ability to actually produce results. Producing means at the end of each day you should have accomplished one or several things. Producing is the act of being intentional. Producing has a focal point of outcomes. And producing leads to progress. So then the question becomes how do you shift from constantly burning out to progressing towards purpose:

1. Know YOUR priorities:

The keyword here is YOUR priorities, not to be confused with what everyone else in your world wants or even needs you to do. Put the proper boundaries to protect your time, instead of just giving it away.

2. Care for YOURSELF:

"Self-Care" is trending in the forms of baths, pedicures, and affirmations, but the goal is to sincerely CARE for yourself. Care about your needs, wants dreams, and desires. What we care about is…we PROTECT!

3. Be a PRO, not a Procrastinator:

I work well under pressure, but there is no FREEDOM in waiting until the last minute. Do what needs to be done in a timely manner.

It may look like very different steps. But look closer at HOW they all work together. If you will STOP procrastinating, you will FREE up some time. With FREE time you can start to CARE for yourself properly. And when you CARE for yourself, you upgrade your standards and build boundaries in order to protect your priorities.
